Sick Child
Advice

Fever at 9 pm, a rash that appeared overnight, a cough that won't settle. Get calm, evidence-based guidance without leaving home.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Chitrakshi Tewari, MD (Paediatrics)

Most everyday illnesses, such as fever, cough, cold, vomiting, diarrhoea and rashes, can be assessed online, with clear advice on home care and the warning signs to watch for. Dr. Chitrakshi Tewari gives prompt, evidence-based guidance, screens for red flags, and tells you honestly if your child needs an in-person examination. A one-time online consultation is ₹2,000.

What an online sick visit can (and can't) do

Most childhood illnesses are viral and self-limiting, and what parents need most is a confident answer to two questions: is this safe to manage at home, and what exactly should we do? An online consultation answers both. I examine what can be seen on video, go through symptoms systematically, screen for red flags, and give you a clear written plan, including exactly when to escalate to in-person care. Emergencies, of course, belong in an emergency department first; I'll always tell you plainly when that's the case.

Common concerns handled online

Fever: assessment, correct dosing by weight, red-flag screening
Cough, cold and noisy breathing
Vomiting and diarrhoea, with a dehydration check
Rashes and skin problems, seen live on video
Ear pain, sore throat, eye discharge
Feeding refusal and 'just not themselves' days

Evidence-based, not prescription-heavy

Fever is a symptom, not a disease; guidance such as the UK's NICE fever guideline focuses on how a child looks and behaves rather than the number on the thermometer alone. Antibiotics are reserved for likely bacterial infections. For diarrhoea, ORS and zinc remain the WHO standard. You'll always know why a treatment is or isn't being recommended.

Go straight to emergency care if

Your child has difficulty breathing, is drowsy or hard to wake, has a fit or seizure, shows signs of severe dehydration, has a non-blanching rash, or is under 3 months old with fever. Call ahead, then go.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions parents ask

Every child is different. If your question is not answered here, ask it in a consultation, that is exactly what they are for.

See a doctor if your child is under three months with any fever, if a fever lasts more than three days, or at any point if your child is very drowsy, breathing fast, has a rash that does not fade under pressure, is not drinking, or has far fewer wet nappies. Your child's overall behaviour matters more than the exact number.
Keep your child comfortable and well hydrated, dress them lightly, and let them rest. Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used for discomfort at the correct weight-based dose. Do not give aspirin to children. Sponging and cold baths are not recommended. Watch for the warning signs and consult if you are unsure.
Yes. Most coughs and colds are viral and can be assessed well over a video call, with advice on home care, comfort and the warning signs that need in-person review. Over-the-counter cough and cold medicines are not recommended for young children, and Dr. Chitrakshi Tewari will guide what actually helps.
Same-day and next-day slots are often available. Message on WhatsApp at +91 87962 70360 with your child's age and symptoms, and Dr. Tewari usually responds within a few hours to arrange a time.
Watch the child, not just the thermometer. Fever with normal activity between spikes is usually reassuring. Concerning signs are fever in a baby under 3 months, fever lasting over 5 days, difficulty breathing, drowsiness, poor fluid intake, a stiff neck or a rash that doesn't fade with pressure. Any of these need urgent review.
I advise precise, weight-based dosing of appropriate medicines and share a written plan. For medicines requiring examination or regulation-restricted prescriptions, I'll tell you exactly what to ask a local doctor for, so nothing is guesswork.
Part of every sick-child consult is triage: screening for signs that need in-person care. If anything suggests that, I'll say so clearly, tell you how urgent it is, and guide you on where to go and what to say when you get there.
