Two schedules: the National Immunization Schedule and the IAP schedule
In India, childhood vaccination follows two well-recognised schedules, and they work together rather than competing.
The National Immunization Schedule (NIS), delivered through the Government of India's Universal Immunization Programme, provides a core set of vaccines free of charge at government facilities. It protects against a range of serious diseases, including tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b, pneumococcal disease, rotavirus, measles and rubella, with Japanese encephalitis in many areas and typhoid now being added.
The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) schedule builds on this. It recommends everything in the national programme and adds vaccines that give broader protection, such as the influenza (flu) vaccine, the typhoid conjugate vaccine, hepatitis A, chickenpox (varicella), MMR (which also covers mumps) and, for adolescents, the HPV vaccine. These additional vaccines are usually given at private clinics.

What to expect after a vaccination
Most children are completely fine after their vaccines. Some have mild, short-lived effects such as a slightly raised temperature, or soreness, redness or swelling where the injection was given, which usually settle within a day or two. Dr. Chitrakshi will tell you what is normal, how to keep your child comfortable, and the uncommon signs that mean you should get in touch.
